Filed under: Brooklyn Real Estate, Downtown Brooklyn, Neighborhood News — admin @ 10:05 am

177 Livingston The newly renovated Class-A commercial space at 177 Livingston St. (aka 180 Livingston) has signed on its first occupants, a public interest law firm called Brooklyn Defender Services. The Treeline Companies renovated the historic building at a cost of $20M, for immediate commercial occupancy.

The building dates from the 1890s, and used to house Abraham & Strauss, now Macy’s.

Check out the swarm of local development on our Downtown Brooklyn map.

Top Hats & Whalebone Corsets at Gage & Tollner

Gage & TollnerThe City section this weekend had a piece on one of our pet topics: what might move in to the Gage & Tollner space on Fulton Street. Our favorite quote:

With the marble slab bar and gaslight fixtures, it took only a slight reach of the imagination to picture the space full of men in top hats and women in whalebone corsets…“It was one of those places with career waiters who would pull out the chair for you and say, ‘Young lady, you’re so beautiful.’ ”

Another tidbit: one realtor is in talks with a Manhattan-based French bistro who is interested in the space. Sounds like a nice option. Thanks also to the Times for the mention of this site!

What do you want to see there? High-end steakhouse, local cuisine–take our poll and feel free to add your own write-in candidates.

From Courthouse to High School

283 Adams Existing Courhouse283 Adams High Schools Conversion Rendering

An alert reader tipped us off to this one–the former courthouse at 283 Adams is being demolished inside to make way for two high schools.

The original building, which makes the House of D look like a country club, will be spruced up and house two high schools: the Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice and the Urban Assembly School of Math and Science for Young Women. One cool feature, in the law school they will build a mock courtroom, complete with judge’s podium, jury box, and (we wish) Sam Waterston as a guest teacher.
